The National Medical Admission Test
(NMAT) is an all Philippines exam which is a pre-requisite for any medical
graduate who aspires to enroll for the MD programme in any of the medical
universities in the Philippines.
First things first .
When is NMAT held?
Nmat is conducted twice every year ,
that is , once in the months of march-april and another in months of
november-december . You can apply for the NMAT once or twice in an year. The
testing dates, local and abroad, are decided and announced by the CHED(Comission on Higher Education) and CEM(Center for Educational Measurement).
Be it a student of the
Philippines or an international student , everyone has to undertake this to be
eligible for the MD programme in the country.
Am I eligible for NMAT
?
If you are a GRADUATE or a GRADUATING STUDENT of any college (bachelors) degree course at
the time of testing then you are absolutely eligible to take the exam. It implies that you can take the NMAT exam in your graduation years.
Is it essential for
foreign graduates too?
Yes , it’s a nationwide exam which is an absolute
requirement for any student from the country itself or outside. NMAT was developed
from a constant concern so as to screen competent and capable candidates who
are aspiring for a medical degree. The purpose of this exam was to improve the
quality of medical education in Philippines.
The NMAT scores achieved
by a medical student/applicant give sufficient and valid information by
carefully evaluating him before giving admission to any medical college. In
order to get admission in the best medical colleges in Philippines, the
students are motivated and encouraged to do well in NMAT test which further
helps them in achieving the best possible score.
Don’t worry though,
there are different medical colleges in the country which accept students with
varying percentile range of NMAT for the MD program . so if you score a bit
less than others in the exam there is a fair chance that there might be some
college in the country which will be accepting students from your percentile
range . then it will be upto your preference for which college is suitable for
you according to your requirements (assuming that you’d score a significant
percentile in exam ;)
Syllabus for NMAT ?
The NMAT is a two-part test:
Part 1 consists of tests of mental ability and
Part 2 are tests of academic proficiency.
The four subtests that compose Part 1 measure aptitudes that were found to have significant correlations with academic performance of medical students, while the four subtests that compose Part 2 measure subject proficiency in areas which are part of the academic background required of applicants to the medical course.
#The subtests in Part 1 are as follows:
VERBAL. This subtest consists of two item types, namely, word analogies and reading comprehension, which measure verbal reasoning, inferential, and analytical abilities. Items in reading comprehension are based on the content of portions of published materials covering a wide range of topics, e.g., social, scientific, medical, philosophical, literary.
INDUCTIVE REASONING. This subtest consists of number, letter, and figural series and figure grouping items. These items measure induction, a reasoning that occurs in the absence of complete information. Specifically, in the test, it is the ability to perceive relationships among stimuli and draw a logical conclusion or infer a general rule.
QUANTITATIVE. This subtest consists of three item types, namely, fundamental operations (or direct computation), problem solving, and data interpretation. These items are intended to measure general reasoning, or the ability to organize and apply knowledge of basic mathematics and reasoning to find solutions for them. 4 NMAT Bulletin of Information
PERCEPTUAL ACUITY. This subtest consists of three item types, namely, hidden figure, mirror image, and identical information. These are essentially visual recognition tasks that are complicated by distractions. Finding solutions to these items involve accuracy by focusing on relevant details, analyzing relationships, and visualization.
